Due to the fact that I am “on the road” a lot for work, I decided to take the rear end to the local mechanic.  As it turns out, he had back surgery the day after I dropped off the rear end.  It was over a month before it was ready for me to pick up. The rear end was inspected and the positive traction unit and axels were in great condition.  New wheel seals and bearings were installed as was a new rear end cover gasket.   Notice in the pictures below the incorrect rear end cover?  It is actually the correct cover.  Some where in the life of the car, the rear end plug was rounded off, the solution … was to cut a hole in the cover, weld in a coupling and install a plug.  A new rear end cove will be ordered from Ground Up.  The old cover will be added to the shop wall as a conversation piece.
